What an end-to-end encrypted notes app actually protects

Notes are where unfinished thoughts live: drafts, doubts, passwords you shouldn’t have written down, feelings you haven’t said out loud. If any app category deserves real encryption, it’s this one. Yet “secure notes” marketing is full of soft claims that don’t survive a second look.

Here’s how to evaluate an encrypted notes app, in plain language.

Encryption “in transit” vs. end-to-end

In transit (HTTPS): your note is protected on the way to the server, then stored where the company can read it. Nearly every app has this; it is not a privacy feature, it’s plumbing.
At rest: the server’s disks are encrypted, but the company holds the keys. Protects against stolen hard drives, not against the company, its staff, or a subpoena.
End-to-end (E2EE): the note is encrypted on your device with keys only you hold. The server stores ciphertext it cannot read. This is the only level where “we can’t see your notes” is literally true.

The tell: if you can reset your password by email and still see your old notes, the provider holds your keys. It isn’t end-to-end.

How Nydhei does it

Nydhei encrypts end-to-end by default: there’s no “secure folder” to remember to use.

What’s encrypted: note titles and content, task titles, descriptions and subtasks, comment text, list names and items, even category and tag names. The full list is published in End-to-end encryption, including the sync plumbing that isn’t (timestamps, never your words).
You hold the key. Cross-device sync is protected by a recovery phrase only you know. Nydhei cannot read your notes and cannot reset your key. That’s the trade that makes the promise real.
New devices are yours to approve. Adding a phone or tablet is an explicit device-linking step, not a silent login.
No account, no cloud, no problem. Skip sign-in entirely and notes stay only on your device.
